Container Number (CT)
A globally unique, standardised 11-character code (e.g. MSCU1234567) consisting of a 4-letter owner prefix, 6 digits, and a check digit. It is physically stencilled on the steel container and registered with BIC (Bureau International des Containers). This number stays with the physical box for its lifetime — across multiple voyages and multiple carriers.

The B/L is the most important document in ocean freight. It is a contract of carriage, a receipt for goods, and — crucially — a document of title. The B/L number is issued by the carrier at the time of shipment, and a single B/L can cover one or multiple containers. Issued by the carrier before the shipment actually departs, the booking number is your reservation reference. You can start tracking a shipment by booking number even before the container is physically loaded — capturing pre-departure milestones such as gate-in and empty equipment pick-up. Once the shipment sails, the B/L takes over as the primary reference.
Pre-departure visibilityWhen to use which?
Use the booking number when cargo is booked but not yet shipped. Switch to the B/L number once the vessel departs — this is the standard for importers, banks, and customs. Use the container number when you need to track the box itself (e.g. for demurrage monitoring at a terminal, or when a container is rolled to a later vessel).
